Am I Ready to Audition for My School Play?

Hi. My name is Gracie and I’m 12, 6 months ago I was tone deaf, but I was told that practice makes perfect, and, it really does. I’m wondering if I should audition for this play as and actress or actress/singer? I’m more comfortable now, but don’t know if I’m quite there.

Hey Gracie,

As a general rule, my rule is make sure that you’re able to carry the part that you’re auditioning for. If you are confident that you could get on stage and be comfortable with it, then I say go for it!

But then again, if you’ve improved quite a bit and the people behind the audition table knew you when you struggled more, then it may not be a bad idea to show them how you’ve improved.

I guess if you’re auditioning in front of new people, the only reason I wouldn’t would be if you were not able to carry your weight as a singer. I say this because you don’t want to leave a bad mark in their memory when you audition for the strictly acting role, if that makes sense.

I hope this helps, and I want to encourage you to keep up the good work. Very few people are really tone deaf, most people just haven’t done a good enough job of training their ear yet, and it sounds like you’re enough of a go-getter to move forward and ignore the nay-sayers. Good for you!
