How Can I Make My Tone Smoother like an R&B Singer?

Hey Ken,

I’m currently pursuing a career in singing but my number one problem is my overall tone is sound very raspy and scratchy at times how can I make my tone smoother like an R&B singer also I would like to know how I could make my falsetto less squeaky and work on my riffs and runs,

Your Advice is deeply appreciated

Hey Michael,

An overly raspy/scratchy voice typically reflects heavy allergies or potentially vocal damage. All that being said, having a raspy voice can give you the edge that you need to stand out as a singer, so it’s not all bad. Heck, a raspy sound may be used on purpose when singing with emotion.

To help offset it some though, the first thing I’d do is make sure you’re taking great care of your voice… ie getting regular sleep, drinking plenty of water, and eliminating (or at least severly moderating) things that have a negative effect on the voice like caffeine, alcohol, smoking, etc.

If you’re more sensitive to these things, I bet you’ll have more success with both your runs and falsetto. Honestly, it just sounds like you sing too heavy, man. Taking things a little easier and keeping your songs in a range that’s 100% comfortable for you and you should be fine.

However, I will say this. If you do all of what I’ve mentioned and you’re still having issues, I’d suggest going to an ENT and getting scoped to see if there’s any vocal damage, just to be safe. Not trying to be a downer here, but knowing is better than not.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted as to how things go!

Best of luck!
