How Do I Get Used to Singing on a PA System?

I feel like I censor myself when singing into a mic since I’m hearing my voice amplified and coming right back to me! It’s getting better with practice, however, I still don’t sing with the freedom that I do when singing without a microphone. Is the solution simply more experience singing into a mic, or is there something else I should know that would help? Thanks.

Hey Anita,

Singing through a PA is certainly different than just singing randomly in your house. Some of them sound good, others sound bad, but one thing’s for sure, no two sound systems or spaces sound the same.

That being said, it makes sense that you feel the need to hold back some when you’re singing in a new environment. It’s normal because you’re not used to it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t overcome it.

Along my vocal journey I realized something… while singing at different places and on different systems is always a little different, I always sounded better when I trusted my voice and sang to the fullest of my abilities, even when that meant I wasn’t 100% comfortable with what I was doing. I’ll take singing 100% and messing up over singing 75% and playing it safe any day!

So, to answer your question, yes, I think to an extent experience will be one of your best friends here… that along with the determination not to alter who you are to fit your environment.

Hope this helps!
