How Do I Take My Singing to the Next Level?

How do I take my singing to the next level? I been singing since I was 5 and now want to go some where with it.

Hey Paris,

When you’re looking to go anywhere in life, you have to have a plan. What’s the path that you want to go down? Where do you want music to take you? What do you have to do in the meantime to get you there?

These questions don’t always have clear answers, but if you’re never looking to answer them, then you’re destined to stay right were you are forever. In order to move forward, you have to have some direction that you’re looking to go. This requires a focus.

When it comes to what’s the best direction for you to take, I can’t really say because a) I don’t know your strengths, weaknesses or desires, and b) no two people’s paths are the same. But, I do know this… all success is the result of accumulated consciousness and all failure is the result of scattered consciousness.

Said differently, it doesn’t always matter what direction you go in, but that you choose a direction and stick with it for a bit. If it doesn’t get you where you want to go, learn from it and pick another direction to stick with for a while.

Likely directions for you may be finding someone to work with you on perfecting your voice… finding 30 different places to perform this year either for free or paid (the more you perform, the better you get)… figuring out how to become a stronger performer… maybe finding members of a band… starting to build a fan base (facebook, youtube, etc)… writing your own music (or finding people to write it for you)… figuring out what type of music you want to sing, and what image you need to portray for your fan base (sounds weird, but totally relevant)… etc.

I don’t know where you are in this process, so I can’t give you a road map. But, think about it this way…

If you want to drive from NYC to LA in the dark, all you need is to be able to see the next 200 ft that’s illuminated by your cars headlights. You don’t have to know the whole path… you just have to know a general direction, have a plan, and keep moving forward when you see the next 200 feet.

Most people would be amazed at what a specific focus, hard work and a bull dog like tenacity can accomplish. Couple that with the mindset that there’s no such thing as failure, only valuable learning experiences, and you’ll go far.

I wish you the best of luck!
