Is It Possible for Me to Learn to Sing?

Can You Sing?
Is It Possible for Me to Learn to Sing?
Hey Sarah,

First off, let me say how wonderful it is that you’ve identified what you dream is at such an early age. I can’t guarantee that you’ll make it, but I know that when one discovers what they they want to do at such a young age, and then develops a magnificent obsession for developing their talent, it’s nothing short of incredible to observe what they can accomplish.

So, all that being said, you’re wondering if you can learn to sing. My answer to that is a resounding yes. Singing is a skill, just like many other skills. Now, some people are going to be stronger than others, but the more you learn about singing, then play with the techniques until you own them, the better and better you’re going to get.

Oh, and by the way, 13 is just about the perfect age to start singing anyway. Many teachers won’t even work with students until they’re about this age as a singers instrument changes quite a bit when they go through their voice change. So one way of looking at it is you just got your new instrument…now you just have to learn how you can best use it.

From here, you’ll probably be looking for some guidance. For that, I suggest that you read through the different articles on this site and on my Singing Tips Blog website.

Also, as you mentioned in your full message, breathing can be an important foundational element of singing. You can learn more about this in my Breathing and Singing  article.

Check out these sources, and play with the techniques for a bit. Remember, the only way you can get better at something is to do it. So, if something doesn’t quite make sense to you, keep playing with it for a bit until it does.

I wish you the absolute best of luck along your journey. All I ask is when you get your first big paying gig, that you fly me in and get me a front row seat! (j/k… you totally don’t have to do that).

Happy Singing!
